Happy Snow Day!!
Beautiful girls!
Good ol' boys!
This week Kindergarten has started the "Math Word of the Week". We have selected 10 words that we feel the kids have a hard time remembering. We started with the word "Math". At lunch time everyday we ask the kids what the word means and how do we use it everyday. We also ask if they can make any connections to the word.
Alex is The Cat's Meow this week. Here are a few of her favorites!
Poetry: Hibernation Poem
Word Work: five, go
Word Family: -et
Each day we do something different with our word family. On Monday we make a circle map of words we think will be in the -et family. If they are not a part of the word family then the words go outside the circle map. On Tuesday we transfer our words from the circle map onto our poster for that week and add anymore -et words that we can think of. On Wednesday we make connections to the -et words and on Thursday I use -et words in a sentence and the kids have to spell the -et words independently on a white board. We also make sentences and spell the words at our magnet center that we go to once a week.
Phonics: We reviewed our work with CVC words and spelt them independently.
Writing Block:
I can write a story for others to read.
We reviewed the components of a sentence: finger spaces, capital at the beginning and periods at the end. I also introduce the writing rubric. Our rubric is a way to help them reflect on their writing and put their clip on what stage they think their writing is on. (picture coming soon)
Reading Block :
I can use reading strategies to comprehend the book.
On Monday we did a picture walk and made predictions about the story Hibernation Station. On Tuesday we read the story and compared our predictions and questions to see if we were right or if our questions were answered. On Wednesday we made a story map of the characters, settings and events and on Thursday we sorted animals that hibernate and animals that do not hibernate.
We also sorted animals and where they hibernate. We then made a class book, A _____ climbed into a ______.
Math
I can solve math problems.
In math we continued working in our problem solving journals and had our 4th math test.
Science
I can give examples of ways rocks, soil, and water are useful.
This weeks vocabulary words:
rock: a solid material made up of minerals
mineral: a solid material found in nature that has never been alive
mining: digging valuable materials out of Earth’s crust
We made sidewalk chalk and learned about different things that are made from rocks and minerals.
