What a GREAT first week of Kindergarten! There was so much learning going on in room 304. Here is how our week went.
Language Arts
*I can statements are the students target objectives for the week.
I can recognize and write my first name.
I can identify classroom rules and procedures.
We practiced many procedures this week such as locating classroom supplies, correct way to put things away, lining up at the door, pushing in chairs, and carpet expectations.
Writer's Workshop:
- Practice writing their name on dotted lines.
- We read Chrysanthemum. We sat in a circle and practice all names using "If your name is on the plate pick it up" Then they created their face on their plate.
- We also sorted our names by the first letter and created a book page of how many letters we have in our name.
- We read I Went Walking and discussed what it means to be an investigator. We first made a list of things we want to learn about Robertson and then we took a tour.
- Read "David Goes to School" and as a class discussed our class rules. Then they created their own "David" and choose a class rule to glue on him.
- We also made our Jack Be Nimble class book after pretending to jump over a candlestick.
- Colored Jack Be Nimble Poem and pasted it into our Poetry Journals.
- Read Mrs. Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten and made a circle map of things we did to get ready.
- Then we made a class book of the way we got ready for Kindergarten.
- Read The Kissing Hand and then sequenced the story.
- After reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom they each made a coconut tree and spelt their name using foam letters.
- Read Stand Tall Molly Lou Melon and made circle map of things that make us special.
- We made a class book, I am special because....
Centers: Alphabet Arcs, alphabet puzzles, alphabet books, letter sandpaper
Math
I can recognizes instantly the quantity of small numbers.
I can explore different manipulatives.
Our Number Talks this week focused on the number 3.
A number talk is to help the students feel comfortable with numbers and to start trusting them. We will do a number talk everyday. Some examples of questions I asked after showing them a card with 3 dots were:

- How many dots did you see?
- How did you see them?
- How did you know it so quickly?
- Did you need to count? So, what did you do or what did your brain do?
We made a circle map of what we think Math is.
They also got to explore our different math tools which are also called manipulatives. We talked about what to do with them and how it should look and sound during Math Workshop.
Science
I can record observations in a science journal, identify science safety, and explore how scientists investigate.
I can conduct a simple investigation that demonstrates safe practices using science tools.
We set up our science journals, learned about scientists, tools, and safety.
Our vocabulary this week was:
Vocabulary Words:
eye droppers: a tool used to move small amounts of liquid
scale: tool that will allow one to compare the weight of two objects
hand lens: tool used by scientists to see small objects larger
safety goggles: goggles worn to help protect the eyes
